World Water Day is coming up on the 22nd of March, and this year’s theme is Water and Food Security, exploring the link between use of water for producing food. Did you know that for a kilo of beef, around 15,000 litres of water are needed, whereas a kilo of wheat requires just 1,500? One of the major impacts of our food consumption is on water sources, often these are felt in other countries where water stresses are already a serious problem.
Conversely, wetlands are important for storing water, producing food (think of rice paddies and fish), and for supporting other ecosystem services such as pollinating insects and predator control.
