Connecting wetland centres across the world

The Conference took place from the 22nd to the 25th of November at the Paya Indah Wetlands, Malaysia, co-organised by the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), and welcomed 50 participants from across Asia.  The conference covered the following main areas:

– Wetlands and People:  Exploring the themes of how to engage people in wetlands, and the importance of working with local communities.
– Wetland Science and communication: Many wetland issues are very complex, and require good communications skills to ensure messages are delivered effectively to visitors and local populations.  The session explored how we can manage our messages to makes sure they are delivered effectively.
– Wetland centres: Looking at trends in new and emerging wetland centres, as well as how we evaluate wetland centres and their effectiveness.
–    Evaluation.  How we can evaluate what wetland centres are delivering in terms of education and engagement.

conference workshopWLI Asia also announced the winner of the WLI Asia Best Wetland Centre, 2010.  This went to the Salim Ali wetland centre at Keoladeo Park in India, presented by Professor Muketab, president of the MNS.  The centre showed a great range of work, from education sessions with schools, to outreach work to local communities excluded from the park, and training local people working in the park itself.  Aditi Raina of WWF India said ‘This award has really given our staff and key partners a boost, and we hope that our successes can help others to sustainably manage their own wetlands.’
