World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd of February, and the theme of Wetlands for our Future is being promoted over the next few years – this year it will look at Sustainable Livelihoods, exploring how people can work in and around wetlands in a positive way. It also links to the new set of UN Sustainable Development Goals, see their website, which replace the Millennium Development Goals.
So this theme would suit wetland centres well, particularly for examples around themes of eco-tourism in most parts of the world.
Visitation and the benefits that sustainable tourism brings to wetlands and their local communities is extremely important, but getting the balance right between access to wetlands and our impact on wildlife is not always easy. Something that wetland centres do very well in many cases! We would love to hear your stories of how you are engaging in sustainable livelihoods at your site, why not drop us a line at this address?
