Connecting wetland centres across the world

Visit to WWT’s Enfield Wetlands project, London

As part of the WLI (Wetland Link International) internship at WWT (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) Slimbridge, we visited the WWT project in Enfield, North London with Andy Graham from WWT’s “Working Wetlands” team.  This project is transforming a non-used area, to become an area with wetlands and to encourage greater use from the local community.

The creation of these wetlands in the urban environment, is intended to increase recreational use of the area and to provide an open place for citizens to get near to wetlands. Also, these wetlands will have the function of receiving and storing rainwater, acting as a natural tool to reduce floods.

Finally, these wetlands will of course provide habitat for wetland wildlife, and be a source of knowledge to learn about wetlands on outdoor classes for students and community.

During the visit we toured the area together with managers from local government and part of the WWT team that is participating in the delivery of the design, technical support and community involvement.
