Birds and Schools Americas, May 2023

The WLI team worked with partners to host webinars between schools and wetland centres in two flyways in May 2023.

To celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, we again activated our Connecting Birds and Schools programme.

Ibrahim Hama led a call in French with Biodiversum Remerschen and two schools in Senegal.

Connor Walsh connected WWT Castle Espie in the UK with WASBA in The Gambia.

Chris Rostron worked with partners Environment for the Americas on a call between Canada, the USA, and Colombia.

For the first time, a call happened in Portuguese, thanks to WLI and MBP member EVOA and Reserva Natural Integral do Ilhéu dos Pássaros.

The events brought together school groups to share their experience of wetlands, and celebrate World Migratory Bird Day. This year’s theme of ‘water: sustaining bird life’ brought up topics such as climate change including unprecedented drought in Kansas, the impact of eco-tourism on coasts and the benefits of participatory science.

Amazing to hear from so many enthusiastic students from all over the world! The next WMBD will be the second weekend of October - for those that want to mark it please let us know.
