Your country needs your young people!

Most WLI members work with young people, connecting them to everything that makes a wetland. There is a new way to empower young people in wetlands: Youth Focal Points to the Convention on Wetlands.

Put simply, every country in the Convention should nominate a person aged under 35 to represent them. This is relatively new, created due to the passion of the Youth Engaged in Wetlands before COP14 in 2022.

As a WLI member, you know young people who might be able to hold the post, or you can support a young person in government to do so.

The Youth Focal Point can be in a government department or in a wetlands NGO. The government needs to nominate them to the convention before 18 October 2024.

Check on the Convention website,, whether there is already a Youth Focal Point for your country; if not, contact the other focal points listed and ask them to support a nomination.

Many thanks to the Youth Focal Point of Australia, Ariana Magini, for providing these details.

For reference, see SC62 Doc.21 on updates to the National Report, which states, “In line with paragraph 21 of Resolution XIV.12 on Strengthening Ramsar connections through youth, questions on youth have been added to Sections 1 and 2, including a request for information on a National Youth Focal Point.”

The Party should include the following info:

  • Designated National Focal Point on Strengthening the Convention on Wetland’s Connections through Youth
    • Name and title:
    • Name of organization:
    • Mailing address:
    • Telephone:
    • Email:
  • Please list the strategies and actions your country is implementing to support youth participation in the implementation of the Convention’s Strategic Plan or in wetlands management (Resolution XIV.12 on Strengthening Ramsar connections through youth, paragraph 21).

For further information about the work of the Youth Working Group, you can read the final, endorsed Youth Workplan online here. Implementation has begun, but please get in touch to contribute to the work.

Resolution XIV.12 adopted at COP14:
ENCOURAGES Contracting Parties to explore and support strategies to engage, collaborate with and involve youth in the implementation of the Convention, such as:
i. appointing national NGO or government Youth Focal Points to the Convention, as outlined in Annex 1, to strengthen the voice and representation of young people;

Appointment Process:

  • Formally appointed by a letter from the Head of Administrative Authority to the Secretariat of the Convention
  • Provide the name, title and contact details of YFP

  • Report in COP15 National Report due 18 October 2024

Term of appointment:

  • We would suggest appointing a YFP for the period between COPs, and engaging the next YFP before COP
  • Alternatively, yearly appointments are possible
  • Handovers and ceremonies are encouraged
