Migratory birds are species that travel from one region to another, often covering thousands of miles, to exploits seasonal food sources, breeding grounds and favourable climates. This remarkable phenomenon is a testament to their adaptability and the intricate balance of global ecosystems.
The 2024 World Migratory Bird Day was celebrated on Wednesday 15th May 2024 at Lekki Conservation Centre. The event witnessed an impressive turnout of about 125 participants, including school children from nine different schools both secondary school and higher institutions such as Rodan College, Harmonie Spring School, D’Cherub School, University of Lagos, Okun-Ajah Community Senior Secondary, Gbara Community Senior Secondary School, Blooming Watercress School, Betterland School, Imperial Gate, numerous adults, media houses such as Stv, Plustv Africa, and the guardian, distinguished guest speaker in person of Dr. Soladoye Iwajomo.
The highlight of the event was a keynote address by the guest speaker, who delved into the theme of the year: “The Importance of insects to Migratory Birds” The speaker emphasized the crucial role that insects play in the diet and survival of migratory birds, discussing various species and their migratory patterns, and the significant threats posed by declining insect populations due to climate change and anthropogenic factors.
In addition to the keynote speech, the event featured engaging presentations by the students. The presentations were aimed at raising awareness about the importance of insects to migratory birds. Through a series of informative and creative displays, the students highlighted how insects are not only a vital food source but also essential for the ecological balance that supports migratory bird populations.
The event provided an excellent platform for education and awareness, emphasizing the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the need for conservation efforts to protect both insects and migratory birds. The active participation of the students and the informative session by the guest speaker left a lasting impact on all attendees, underscoring the importance of continued environmental education and conservation initiatives.
