Welcome to the latest WLI World newsletter! This time we continue to celebrate the WLI Star Wetland Centre winners for this year, and the setting of the ceremony: Convention on Wetlands COP15. Tina summarises her experience there, and we have stories from one winner from this round and another from 2022.
It has been a busy year already, not just with the Star awards but also the WLI Small Grants scheme. This is also going from strength to strength, with a great dedicated support from our new Team Assistant, Sana Mezoughi. Her predecessor, María Elisa Sánchez is working to conclude her PhD, and is also organising the Pacific Americas Flyway Youth Forum. Thank you María Elisa for your great contribution to WLI!
We have been so busy we haven’t managed to run a WLI webinar. We hope to hold at least one celebrating the Star Wetland Centres before the end of 2025. For now, you can see their mini-profiles on the WLI website.

Deadline 29 September! We want this year’s WLI membership survey to be the biggest ever. So please have a look at it on the WLI website and share your insight to help us improve what we do. Most of the questions are optional so you can chose to focus on specific areas for us to develop, or give us a full overview. It is available in multiple languages too.
In mid-July I joined WWT colleagues at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe for the Convention on Wetlands COP15. As one of the six International Organization Partners (IOPs), WWT has an important role to push for the best outcomes for wetlands and ensure the voices of those working to protect them are heard. As an IOP we have observer status in all the official meetings, and whilst none of the IOPs has voting rights, as an expert group, we don’t hold back from influencing and advocacy.
For me personally, the best part of being at COP, was to meet so many of our partners, who I have only met virtually, as well as meeting others for the first time. I spent a lot of my time at the IOPs exhibition booth, trading wetland stories with NGO staff, academics, WLI members, interested individuals, and a highlight for me was meeting school teachers and their students from Victoria Falls, who told me about the importance of lessons in living alongside wildlife from early childhood. Victoria Falls is surrounded by national parks, which means human-wildlife close encounters are a real possibility every day. Even during my stay, herds of wild buffalos crossed the road near the conference venue, causing hold-ups for those trying to get to the first sessions of the day. And we were thrilled to see warthogs, kudu, bushbuck and other antelopes grazing at the bottom of the hotel’s gardens.
The WWT team was involved in several of the side events, including supporting youth engagement in wetland conservation, demonstrating the success of the Wetland Learning Hub in building capacity and a network of conservationists across the globe, speaking about our work in Cambodia at the launch of the Indo-Burma Regional Initiative’s new strategic plan, playing a fundamental part in launching the groundbreaking Global Wetland Outlook (which WWT scientists had contributed to) and finally leading an event on building civil society capacity for conservation, launching the newest World Wetlands Survey (the World Wetland Network’s flagship participatory survey of the state of the world’s wetland) and celebrating the winners of this year’s Wetland Link International (WLI) Star Wetland Centre awards. I also joined daily briefing sessions with WWN members, exchanging information about the side events we’d attended, and those on that day’s list.
Meanwhile in the Plenary sessions, the representatives of the 172 contracting parties negotiated Resolutions, a much-needed uplift in financing for the Secretariat, and a new strategic plan. The latter references for the first time, the transformative change needed to reverse the decline of the world’s wetlands. It also links the superpowers of wetlands to wider climate and nature commitments, such as those made at other international conventions e.g. the climate and biodiversity COPs. There’s a long way to go before we start reversing wetland decline, but this new plan is a critical starting point.
Notable Resolutions passed included:
- Launching the new CEPA plan, entitled People and Wetlands.
- Encouraging governments to develop or strengthen policies that will restore degraded freshwater ecosystems, with the Freshwater Challenge – the world’s largest ecosystem restoration partnership - noted as a key tool for action.
- Pushing countries to make the most of the OECM designation mechanism to ensure more formal protected status for wetlands that currently have none.
- Support for the recognition the cultural value wetlands hold for communities and the role they can play in strengthening wetland protection, from art and storytelling activities to the deeper cultural identities held by communities who have lived next to wetlands for centuries.
- Mainstreaming youth engagement in wetlands through the continuation of the Youth Working Group through the next three years. Over 30 youth delegates attended this COP, showing the desire for youth to have a voice within the Convention.
The next Wetlands COP will be held in Panama in 2028. From now until then, I and my team at WWT will be working hard in the countries we operate in to ensure wetlands and wetland livelihoods are protected, while inspiring others to do the same. We intend to strengthen our work to connect wetland centres and wetland groups, as well as building capacity among conservationists across the globe. I look forward to working with all WLI members to deliver our mission to restore and protect wetlands and unlock their power, wherever you are.

The Santay Observatory, a floating cultural and educational center located in the Isla Santay Wetland (Ramsar Site, Guayas, Ecuador), consolidated in 2025 a series of activities integrating art, history, and environmental education, reaffirming its role as a member of the Wetland Link International (WLI) network.

• Launch of the video “Sounds of the Wetland”
On July 26, in the framework of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, the video “Sounds of the Wetland” was premiered. Produced by the Amigos de Santay Association with financial support from WLI and Eversheds Sutherland through the 2023–2024 Small Grants Program, the event brought together producers, community members, and visitors, becoming an example of how audiovisual communication can strengthen environmental education.
• Exhibitions and youth creativity
On September 7, the 16th exhibition, “Vision”, was inaugurated with the participation of children and young people from the Plaza Casuarina Art Workshop of Guayaquil. Their works highlighted the creative capacity of local youth, reaffirming the Observatory as a cultural showcase where artistic expression and environmental awareness converge. The opening also marked the third anniversary of the Observatory.
February 24, “Living Wetland: The Hidden Beauty of Santay.”
This collective photography exhibition brought together six photographers, including a local resident, to reveal the lesser-seen facets of the wetland. With images of wildlife, landscapes, and everyday scenes, it aimed to raise awareness among children and adults about Santay’s hidden beauty and the importance of its conservation.

June 7, “Santay Showcases its Science: Infographics Revealing the Secrets of the Wetland.”
This educational exhibition translated four recent scientific studies about the island into infographics. Designed to coincide with World Environment Day, it allowed the public to understand in a clear and visual way the natural richness and ecological processes of the wetland.
• Cultural October: choral music and living history
In October, two emblematic initiatives will take place:
• The choral festival “Santay enCanta 2025”, which will bring together choirs from cultural and educational institutions in Guayaquil.
• The historical reenactment “Bolívar Returns to Santay”, performed by students of the Jaime Roldós School and local residents, evoking the passage of Simón Bolívar through the island.
• International recognition: two WLI Wetland Stars
At Ramsar COP15 (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, July 2025), the Santay Observatory received two WLI Wetland Stars:
• People, for its community engagement work with children, youth, and visitors.
• Facilities, for being an innovative floating cultural and environmental education center in a protected natural area.
This recognition places the Santay Observatory among the most outstanding wetland education centers worldwide.

Outlook
Consolidated as the cultural window of the wetland and a regional benchmark within the WLI network, the Santay Observatory looks toward 2026 with a commitment to expand its cultural programming, strengthen community environmental education, and deepen its engagement with its surroundings.

This ecosystem is home to more than 130 species.
At Fundación Kennedy, we are leading a conservation project for the Estero Las Cruces Wetland, located in the municipality of Quilicura (Santiago de Chile). The goal is to protect this valuable ecosystem while also bringing the community closer to its natural and cultural richness.
This urban wetland is an oasis of biodiversity in the middle of a highly urbanized and industrialized area. It hosts more than 130 species of native and migratory flora, fauna, and fungi, which find here shelter, food, and breeding grounds. Among them, the Andean Goose (Oressochen melanopterus), which arrives in winter as an emblematic visitor, and the Coypu (Myocastor coypus), a semi-aquatic mammal that symbolizes the resilience of wildlife in the city, stand out.
As part of this project, we have carried out environmental monitoring activities that allow us to generate scientific information through direct observation and photographic records. These data have been key not only to understanding the wetland’s dynamics but also to educating and raising awareness among the local community.
In parallel, we conduct educational activities in nearby schools, where children and young people learn about the biodiversity of their own territory. Talks, participatory activities, and photographic exhibitions transform every record into a pedagogical tool: an Andean Goose in flight, a Coypu among the reeds, or the diversity of birdlife become bridges between science and classrooms.
Our approach combines conservation and environmental education as complementary paths. On the one hand, scientific monitoring highlights the importance of the wetland in the face of urban threats. On the other, working with the school community strengthens a sense of belonging and commitment. We firmly believe that long-term conservation will only be possible if local people recognize and defend their natural heritage.
The Quilicura project seeks not only to protect the flora and fauna of Estero Las Cruces but also to strengthen the social fabric that safeguards it. In this way, we are building a network of people and institutions who understand that this municipality has a valuable ecosystem that deserves to be known, valued, and protected.
Our challenge is to continue consolidating this connection between nature and community, convinced that only with an informed and engaged citizenry can we ensure a sustainable future for urban wetlands in Chile.

The cadre training trip is an annual tradition of our patrol team, hosted by college students to inspire members aged 13–18 with new ideas and broader perspectives. From 2019 to 2024, we explored Taiwan’s mountains and islands. In 2025, with the opportunity gained through WLI, we embarked on our first trip abroad—to Hong Kong.
At the 2024 WLI conference, we met the managers of Mai Po from WWF Hong Kong. We were amazed that such a world-renowned wetland could be preserved in a highly developed city and eager to find out how this was achieved, and with the generous support of WWF, the trip became a reality.
WWF prepared diverse activities for us. On the first day, teacher Wing and Karen guided us through Mai Po and its education center, where we saw professional monitoring equipment new to us. After dinner, we joined a night walk and encountered bats, spiders, and fireflies. The contrast between Shenzhen’s neon lights across the river and Mai Po’s tranquil nature highlighted the challenges of conservation in such a highly urbanized region, and reminded us to appreciate their perseverance and commitment.
The next day, WWF arranged a youth training session that helped us reflect on our patrol team’s potential and strategies to overcome obstacles. They also shared valuable experiences in environmental education for different audiences, offering us useful models to improve our own programs. Later, we crossed a floating bridge through mangroves to a birdwatching cottage with a breathtaking view at Deep Bay, where we were fortunate to see egrets, kingfishers, and curlews despite it not being peak birdwatching season.
Even though we did not visit during the prime birdwatching season, every sight we encountered made the trip worthwhile. Not only because the iconic bird species we’ve spotted, also the invaluable lessons we learned from WWF. From wetland management—using scientific methods to monitor the ecosystem—to environmental education, we were inspired to reflect on what we could do to improve the quality of our activities. As we concluded, “Besides attracting students to learn skills and knowledge, we should also convey value messages that can last for a lifetime.”
To successfully complete this trip to Hong Kong, WWF Hong Kong is undoubtedly the one we owe the most gratitude to. From arranging the schedule and customizing lessons, to assisting us with all kinds of challenges—their support was indispensable. In fact, beyond Mai Po, we also visited another WWF center in Hoi Ha Wan, from which we also gained a lot. Our deepest appreciation goes to WWF Hong Kong for their professionalism, thoughtfulness, and passion. Both the Mai Po Wetland itself and its dedicated managers make this place worth visiting.
Finally, we also extend our thanks to WLI, where we first made the connection that brought this trip into reality. We look forward to visit other outstanding wetlands and environmental education classrooms around the world!

The DANAPURE Wetland has acquired great importance at the national and international level in the field of avifauna conservation, allowing us to carry out research projects with butterflies and frogs. Additionally, this has led to DANAPURE being invited to participate with its research in the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) in Mexico. Crossing borders makes us feel very proud, and for this reason, we thank WLI for its permanent support to our work.

In 2019, the 1st Motus station in Argentina was installed at the San Antonio lighthouse, located at the southern end of the Samborombón Bay Ramsar Site, Punta Rasa. In a collaborative effort between the guadaparque staff of the Ministry of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires and researchers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it was possible to equip a monitoring system that uses automated radio telemetry to track wildlife to contribute to its conservation and weave a collaborative research network.
A research station that can track migratory birds, bats, and insects to provide researchers with information that collaborates so that decision-makers and biodiversity managers can take measures and actions to conserve the populations of these species, whose numbers are declining at an alarming rate.
Compared to other technologies, automated radio telemetry makes it possible to track animals with high temporal and geographical accuracy, over great distances. The Motus open source database and network are powered by Birds Canada, being the largest collaborative automated telemetry system in the world with more than 2062 stations currently in place and under continuous development.
The four antennas that make up the station are directed towards different sectors of the Rincón de Ajo Provincial Nature Reserve and the Samborombón Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Then, later in 2022, 12 specimens of the Red Knot (Calidriscanutus rufa) were captured and equipped with radio transmitters (nanotags) to establish presence, habitat choice and permanence times of the species during the summer in the protected natural areas that make up this important wetland.
In the capture, they were marked with metal rings on the right tarsus with the inscription PR02+numbering+e-mail bs@gba.gov.ar and with orange plastic flags coded with 3 black letters on the left tibia, allowing subsequent identification at the individual level.
The devices were placed on their backs and morphometric measurements such as weight, beak (culmen), tarsus, abdominal profile, ages, molt and long wing were taken.
For subsequent follow-ups, they were monitored with binoculars and telescopes with vehicle and walking tours during the months of July, August and September. We also have the participation of the reports of citizens who visit the wetland to take photographs. Then the data stored by the receiving equipment were downloaded to the station for processing and analysis.
The Motus station detected 11 individuals between two and 13 times each. While in the monitoring we recorded 10 individuals between two and six times each.
The specimen equipped with the Nanotag #339 AHU flag was last detected by the station on July 16 but was observed in monitoring from July 29 to September on several occasions. This suggests that both activities are necessary and complementary for the study of wildlife and that in turn the use of radio-transmitters does not affect the survival or movements of individuals.
Implementing a greater number of radio transmitters to continue the studies of this species would enable a greater understanding of the permanence and use of space in the different life cycles in the protected area. To this end, it is necessary to develop efforts to achieve collaborative and interdisciplinary actions, optimizing the different projects that make up the conservation programs; research; public use; and participation, education and environmental communication of the Management Plan of the Provincial Natural Protected Areas of Samborombón Bay for the conservation of this and other species that use the environments of this important Wetland.
Swifts and swallows are very important component of the aerial ecosystem. Once a common sight in our towns and countryside, the swifts and the swallows have been disappearing fast from our skies all over the world. Although these belong to different families of bird (Swifts belong to the family Apodidae and the swallows to the Hirundinidae), these are similar in their use of habitat, food and habits. While foraging, swifts keep themselves high up in the sky and swallows fly low over the ground. Swallows take rest while foraging by perching on trees or electric wires.
The Society for Research in Ecology and Environment (SREE) conducted road transect and questionnaire surveys in two districts of northwestern India in Bharatpur and Bayana between December 2024 and July 2025 to understand abundance and diversity of swifts and swallows and to understand peoples’ knowledge and perception of these birds.
A 100 km road transect and six-point counts recorded one species of swift i.e. House Swift Apus affinis and four species of swallows i.e. Barn Hirundo rustica, Wire-tailed Hirundo smithii, Red-rumped Hirundo daurica and Streak-throated Hirundo fluvicola Swallows. We found a communal nesting colony of Streak-throated Swallow (900 nests) in a cemented highway bridge built over a seasonal river in Bayana, and 50 House Swift nests under the roof of a 4 m tall old building in Bharatpur. A single tunnel shaped nest of Red-rumped Swallow was also recorded in a culvert and a cup-shaped nest of Wire-tailed Swallow in Bharatpur. A maximum of 1000 Barn Swallows were sighted in our area foraging over freshwater wetlands. These are migratory to our region, departing during March. Our team met school principals, teachers, students and villagers to make them aware of these birds in their localities and to initiate an interest in monitoring these birds.
Our questionnaire survey revealed that urban people keep less knowledge of these birds (15%, N = 30) than rural people (60%, N = 30). However, both groups had minimal knowledge when it comes to differentiating between swift and swallow. Of all respondents, only 25% kept knowledge of the nests of these birds. We feel that there is an urgent need to conduct an ecological study on swifts and swallows in the region. A survey to locate nests of all these birds is required. Activities to educate students, teachers, local people about the importance of these birds should be also taken up urgently.
The wetlands of Matuku Link in Auckland, New Zealand, are a habitat for its namesake, the nationally critical matuku [Australasian bittern] and other rare and uncommon water birds such as the puweto [spotless crake], pateke, [brown teal] and maataata [fernbird]. They also though, are a habitat for several exotic mammalian species: stoats, ferrets, & rats and protecting our native fauna means controlling the numbers of these predators. Recently a new trapline cut through dense scrub and on steep slopes, was established close to the wetland edge with a number of traps housed in wooden boxes spaced at appropriate intervals.


This part of the wetland has not been part of the predator control previously owing to the difficulty of access. As such it could be anticipated that the unwanted predators would be at peak population density. Around the same time as the trapline was being discussed, several people in the local community contracted leptospirosis, and eDNA testing found the bacteria were significantly present in the adjacent lake water. Vectors of the organism include rodents so a PhD student contacted us to see if we could provide freshly caught rats for analysis. Freshly caught rats are to be dissected and the kidneys removed for analysis and extraction of DNA and any leptospiral DNA found can be further analysed to determine the serotype. In this way it is hoped to find how prevalent the leptospiral bacteria are in this local population of rats and which serotypes are present.
Simple snap traps and peanut butter lure are attached to trees and covered with a decidedly low-tech cover [cut down plastic milk bottles] as in the photos below. The cover helps preserve the lure from rain and assists in directing the approach of the rats for a humane kill.
This new trapline therefore is not only benefitting environmental health but also may give valuable data for human health.


Once again we have been supported by an external donor to provide small grants to WLI members for their work. At the time of writing this, we are assessing the applications. We will be in touch with successful applicants before November, and we will send our apologies to others after that. With Sana dedicating time to this every week of the next 11 months, we hope to provide more resources for future applicants to raise the standard even further – even though this will make it even more difficult for us to decide who gets the grants! Sana Mezoughi is a multilingual environmental professional with over a decade of experience across the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Middle East. She began her career at WWF North Africa, where she developed the concept and spearheaded the stakeholder process that led to the internationally recognised Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation. She later led stakeholder consultations in Africa for the development of the Ramsar Convention’s Fifth Strategic Plan. Sana went on to lead the Global Environments Network and the SEED Funding Programme at the Global Diversity Foundation, supporting grassroots organisations protecting nature and cultural heritage. She has collaborated with institutions such as ENI-CBC (EU), Inherit, the University of Valencia, Heinrich Böll Foundation, and the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, building expertise in coordinating international networks, monitoring and evaluating donor-funded initiatives, managing projects and programmes, and overseeing grants. She currently works part-time with MedWet (Ramsar Mediterranean Initiative) and has recently joined the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) as International Engagement Assistant.
