Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre

Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre (AEEC) is located in Akrotiri community and has been operating since 2004. From 2014 onwards the Centre is housed in one of the most environmentally-friendly buildings in Cyprus with a size of about 500 square meters. It is the result of the cooperation between the Sovereign Base Areas Administration, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cyprus and the local Community. Facility is used for educational programs delivered by specialized teachers, hosting about 9000 children per year. In addition, it hosts another about 11000 visitors annually, including families, groups and individuals, who are guided and get information on the importance of local wetlands and other habitats. It includes exhibition areas with dioramas and interactive exhibits , a laboratory, a conference room, a library, a wildlife observation area, a botanic garden and a playground. The observation area offers spectacular views to the Salt Lake and has high-quality telescopes and binoculars that can be used to watch the diversity of bird species encountered in the area. Furthermore, AEEC personnel are actively involved and support research and management efforts, and facilitate and host seminars, conferences and other environmentally related events. Since its creation it became a landmark and a focal point for visitors of the natural and cultural landscape of the area.
The judges loved
A good programme, and a lot of visitors. Addressing the issues of migratory birds within the context of hunting is also positive. Their CEPA activities are very relevant and comprehensive for all audiences.
