A Ramsar site since 1995, the Lac de Grand-Lieu is a major wetland in mainland France. Located in the west of France, 20 minutes from Nantes, this natural lowland lake extends in winter over a surface area of 6,300 hectares. It is known for to shelter a very diversified fauna and flora and flora, including the largest floating meadow in Europe (1500 hectares), mainly composed of water lilies. Consisting of 4 main habitats habitats (flooded meadows, wooded reedbeds, open water, and floating floating grass beds), it is home to numerous migratory animal species such as the European eel, the white spoonbill and the tern.
A large part of the lake is classified as a Nature Reserve (3600 hectares), which makes it an area preserved from pollution. This makes it a space preserved from human access. Only reserve managers, scientists, and professional fishermen are allowed to navigate. Since 2014, the team of La Maison du Lac de Grand-Lieu has been working with the managers of nature reserves (including the SNPN - National Society for the Protection of Nature association under the law of 1901) in order to transmit their knowledge to the public to the public and to promote these often often little-known areas, to raise awareness of their protection.
