Overall aims of the centre

Conserve waterbirds in the Lobito lagoons through sustainable participatory management of their habitat, produce and disseminate information about birdlife and wetlands, promote environmental education and ecotourism.

Description of the centre

CIOMA – Lobito Birdwatching, Information and Monitoring Centre is a project under development in Lobito wetland site that is an important sanctuary for migratory waterbirds located on the central coast of Angola, in Benguela Province.

Birdwatching and counting exercises with schools, environmental education with nearby communities, guided visits, birdlife information dissemination.

Top three successes

1) Environmental education programs with Lobito primary schools;

2) Engagement of local communities in conservation efforts;

3) Partnership and strong relations with other centres along the East Atlantic Flyway

Top three challenges

We are still struggling to find funding support to develop our main project; we are also working to find ways for the centre sustainability, as well as developing a website for our centre.
