Overall aims of the centre

Aim 1: Disseminating knowledge about global climate change.
Aim 2: Mitigating anthropopression on the Vistula River in its Kampinos Forest leg.
Aim 3: Promoting the principles of the Ramsar Convention among the local communities, with the further aim of nominating this section of the Vistula River for the list of Ramsar sites of international importance.

Description of the centre

The Vistula (Wisła) river is on of last unregulated big rivers in Europe. Due to it’s wild state no commercial traffic is observed. The area of our further activity t is located between flood walls on the leg long about 40 kilometres, wide 1.2 – 1.5 kilometres, with many islands and disappearing remains of the regulation. Sand is the dominating bottom material. It gives shelter to tens of thousands of birds, especially on the islands, which are protected as Nature 2000 areas and additional restrictions if necessary in particular locations Usual people’s presence is limited to amateur fishermen and tourists-kayakers.

Our approach may seem unusual, as we do not locate our activity in a certain geographical point, creating no typical center where visitors arrive. Instead, we want to move along 40 km leg of a big great river, visiting and educatingvarious communities. Currently, this is achieved through the internet and real temporary exhibitions, but ultimately we want to bring this idea to life by building a floating educational station, kind of a floating class to act in an open public space rather than restricted area.

Work Areas

Main CEPA work area

Since the founding year, 2022, we are celebrating World Wetlands Day by exhibitions of photography, art and research results, pointing Ramsar Convention principles as a rule. Each of the exhibitions was dedicated to a different aspect of the wetlands. Then they use to be documented on our website, www.twbk.pl. For WWD 2027 we have already advanced the project together with the Portuguese partner. Anyway, we plan to spread our presence beyond Warszawa.

Top three successes

Research and exhibitions. In their professional life, most of our members are well experienced museum researches and project managers. This works well in the big city we are located in

Top three challenges

Our challenge is, first of all, a weak communication with local communities at the site. These are farmers and residents of small towns. They have little awareness of the value of natural resources, other than the value they derive from profit or personal relaxation. They fear change. We want to change that.
