About
Getterön’s nature reserve is dominated by extensive, grazed salt marsh meadows, but there are also several types of natural habitats in the nature reserve, each one of which has its particular importance for Getteröns bid life. The area covers 350 ha and belongs to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. It is a Ramsar site and classified as an internationally significant area for birds.

Overall aims of the centre
Naturum Getterön is a visitor centre with activities and exhibitions located next to Getterön´s nature reserves. Here you are welcomed by a knowledgeable staff that will answer your questions and guide you through the area’s attractions.
Naturum offer guided walks and tours, lectures and events. You will also find literature, and multimedia to immerse yourself in. In addition, there are brochures and information boards providing tips about naturum activities and the nature reserve.
Description of the centre
Getterön’s nature reserve is dominated by extensive, grazed salt marsh meadows, but there are also several types of natural habitats in the nature reserve, each one of which has its particular importance for Getteröns bid life. The area covers 350 ha and belongs to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. It is a Ramsar site and classified as an internationally significant area for birds.
Getterön – is located 2 km north of the centre of Varberg, in the province of Halland on the west coast of Sweden.
About 170 species regularly breed or rest here during migration. Among breeding birds are avocet, ruff, black-tailed godwit, southern dunlin, redshank, little tern, greylag goose, bearded tit and yellow wagtail. Large numbers of wading birds and dabbling ducks gather during spring and autumn.
During winter Getterön is frequented by species such as white-tailed eagle, peregrine, smew, kingsfisher, little grebe and bittern. Up to 2009, not less than 338 species have been recorded at Getterön.
The nature reserve is well prepared for visitors with several hides and a bird tower. Naturum Getterön offers café, exhibitions, sales of books and binoculars, conference premises etc. Naturum is open all year round, but only at weekends during the winter.

Top three successes
1) The co-operation in arranging activities between naturum and non-profit organisations, such as the local bird watching organisation.
2) Every spring in may a regional bird fair is arranged at naturum Getterön. There are plenty of interesting bird and birding-related activities available for everyone. Guided tours in the reserve, interesting lectures, bird-ringing demonstrations, raffles and activities geared towards children are also on offer. This event attracts yearly around 2000 visitors.
3) Guided bird tours in the reserve during summer evenings are very popular amongst summer tourists in the area, especially families. Varberg is one of the biggest tourist cities in Sweden. Every summer activities aimed at the tourists are carried out.
