Through the “Exploring Aquatic Life” summer camp course, students drew aquatic creatures and made Father’s Day cards.

Students must first survey the aquatic insects in the pheasant-tailed jacana’s habitat.

It’s summer vacation, and we held a summer camp for elementary school students in grades three through six. The two-day course introduced the behavior of the Pheasant-tailed Jacana and the ecosystem on which it depends. Through games, students learned about the survival challenges faced by the Pheasant-tailed Jacana and what they, as students, can do to protect it.

The two-day course introduced the diet of the Pheasant-tailed Jacana, floating-leaved plants, wetland biodiversity, and habitat conservation. Students learned about the pheasant-tailed jacana’s diet by collecting aquatic organisms and observing aquatic insects in water chestnut fields. The activity began with guessing whether areas with lush vegetation had more aquatic insects. They then used tools (such as fishing nets) to collect aquatic insects, classifying and counting them. They also used magnifying glasses and portable microscopes to observe the shapes of the aquatic organisms. Finally, students drew their observations and presented them in class. Some students even drew tadpoles, water beetles, and other small animals.

This camp was held a few days before Father’s Day (August 8th) in Taiwan. The pheasant-tailed jacana is a symbol of outstanding fathers because the male jacana is responsible for incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks. Using paint and brushes, decorating with plant leaves and other materials, students turned their drawings into Father’s Day cards and expressed their best wishes for thor fathers on the cards!

The fathers who received this special gift were delighted to see that their children had a lot of fun and learned a great deal at the camp.

The student drew a tadpole. One of the students drew an underwater creature and gave it to their father with the message “Happy Father’s Day.”
