International Conference «Wetlands of Central Asia and Ramsar Convention»
November 19-22, 2012 will be the International Conference «Wetlands of Central Asia and the Ramsar Convention», timed to the 10th anniversary of ratification of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands by the Kyrgyz Republic.
After the Conference, a regional training workshop for Central Asian officials on the implementation of the Ramsar Convention obligations will be held, with the support of the Training and Research Regional Ramsar Center in Central and West Asia and the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention.
The purpose of the event is to discuss issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands in the Kyrgyz Republic, the effective implementation of the Ramsar Convention in the Central Asian region
Representatives of the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, the Training and Research Regional Ramsar Center, four Central Asian states: Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan (responsible for the Ramsar Convention from each country), international universities, environmental organizations and local stakeholders, universities, international organizations and NGOs, etc.
The main financial support is provided by the Training and Research Regional Ramsar Center, the United Nations Development Program, the State Agency and the Biosphere Territory «Issyk-Kul».
Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. They are centers of biological diversity, sources of water and primary productivity, on which the existence of innumerable species of plants and animals depends.
In view of their importance, the world community has joined forces through the development of an Intergovernmental Agreement — the Convention on Wetlands — as a means to draw the attention of the international community to the topic of the accelerating disappearance of wetland habitats.
The overall objective of the Convention is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local, regional and national action and international cooperation as a contribution to the achievement of sustainable development throughout the world.
The official title of the treaty: «Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, Especially as Waterfowl Habitat.» The Convention was adopted on February 2, 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
The Kyrgyz Republic acceded to the Ramsar Convention in 2002. Currently, the Issyk-Kul state natural reserve together with the lake. Issyk-Kul Lake Chatyr-Kul and the lake. Son-Kul are included in the Ramsar List.
This convention is the first of the modern global intergovernmental treaties on the protection and sustainable use of natural resources.
