International Conference “The Wetlands of Central Asia and the Ramsar Convention”
19 – 22 November 2012

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1972), an international conference and workshop entitled “Wetlands of Central Asia and the Ramsar Convention”, will be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic from 19 – 22 November, 2012.

The purpose of the conference will be to discuss the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands in the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as the effective implementation of the Ramsar Convention in Central Asia

Attending the conference will be representatives from the government of the Kyrgyz Republic as well as officials from the government of other Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, who are responsible for implementation of the Ramsar Convention. Also attending will be representatives from the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, the Ramsar Regional Center for Central and West Asia (RRC-CWA), as well as from international universities, environmental organizations and local concerned agencies, universities, and NGOs.

Following the conference on 19 – 20 November, a workshop will be held in the Issyk-Kul region from 21 – 22 November for more detailed discussion between the Ramsar Focal Points from the Central Asia region and to share experiences and best practices. Staff from the RRC-CWA and the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention will also update the participants on the work of Convention and to identify priority areas for future work on wetland conservation and wise use.

The Kyrgyz Republic acceded to the Ramsar Convention in 2002 and currently, has three wetlands on the List of Wetlands of International Importance. These are the Issyk-Kul State Natural Reserve with Issyk-Kul Lake, Chatyr-Kul Lake and Son-Kul Lake.
