Summary of World Wetlands Day 2017 in Vitoria-Gasteiz

On the occasion of this event, the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz and its Center for Environmental Studies organized various activities aimed at raising awareness and awareness among citizens in favor of the safeguarding of wetlands.

Among the events organized was the visit to the Arkarai wetland, a trap located in the Gorbeia Natural Park, whose habitat not only represents a benefit for the region in ecological and landscape terms, but is an element of symbolic relevance to reinforce ties of identity of an entire citizenry committed to the conservation of its natural heritage. At the city level, an open day was organized in Ataria, where the technician of the HASI Foundation, José María García gave a lecture on the “bioindicator” concept in the waterfowl environment and how the monitoring program of aquatic birds of the Basque Autonomous Community, with censuses accumulated since the 70s of the twentieth century, is an indispensable tool to know the state of conservation of populations and the health of their habitats.

During the weekend, the citizens were able to go inside the Salburua wetland in search of the agile frog, one of the most emblematic species of the park, to carry out a playful activity linked to aspects of awareness and conservation about these ecosystems, entitled “Hezeguneen mundu eguna ospatzeko jarduera”, or listen to the story of a storyteller entitled “Planet water”.
