Feeling younger everyday! Urdaibai Bird Center and old people’s homes project
The active aging project being run by Urdaibai Bird Center and Arrotegi Rest Home is in full swing in Busturia. It´s proving not only to be active and engaging for the participants, but also rejuvenating. They are becoming real scientific researchers!
The residents are taking part in "Garden Birds", a project which helps people get to know the birds which live around them. The birds can be observed from the Rest Home as feeders have been placed in the grounds to attract them.
Observation Room
Every day the participants carry out a census of the birds they see from their special observatory. Colourful goldfinches, siskins, finches, robins, blue tits and great tits are counted every morning and the data collected is reported to the Urdaibai Bird Center. When the winter is over we will analyse and compare it with the data of the more than 100 participants who take part in the project annually.
Weekly Census
In addition to doing the census, participants also attended a bird ring sessions. Next on the agenda is the installation of nest boxes. It´s very exciting and everyone is looking forward to following the progress of new arrivals in spring.
