The Green House houses the Nature Centre, a service of the Province Limburg (Belgium).

Founded/opened: 1998


A visitor and educational centre, situated in the arboretum of the provincial domain of Bokrijk (also known for its open-air museum) and surrounded by a vast pond area (a total of about 3000 ponds in the region), woodlands and meadows.

The permanent exhibition focuses on animal life at night.

It contains an exhibition, classroom, documentation centre and meeting room.

We may welcome about 30,000 visitors a year.


Biologists, educational staff members, reception staff members, free staff members for instruction of the visiting groups.

Key species/features

Animals of the night, their habitats and adaptations – e.g. owls, Bittern, martens etc.


The Nature Centre is part of LIMNET, the ‘Natural and Environmental Education Network of Limburg’; the Green House coordinates the network. It also houses LIKONA, the nature study network of Limburg.

Some staff members also support environmental care on school.

Interpretation and exhibitry

A permanent, interactive exhibition on animals in the night, and an attractive ‘theatre’-arrangement (with walkman and a lot of music) about ‘Living in the Night’
(Dutch only).

Formal (school and university) learning

Educational programmes about water and woodland ecology, silence and waste prevention from 6-18 years.

Informal (general public) learning

Brochures, folders, guided tours in the arboretum, the forest and to the ponds…


Training on nature and environmental study, guiding and teaching.
