Overall aims of the centre
To mobilise local communities living in and around the Virunga National Park for the protection of the Virunga National Park's ecosystems
Description of the centre
We occupy two hectares, and we work with the local communities bordering the Virunga National Park; we receive at least three thousand visitors per year; the radio is located in the province of North Kivu, Rutshuru Territory, Kanyabayonga/RD.Congo.
Main CEPA work area
The mobilization on the respect of the Virunga National Park; the popularization of the legal texts and international conventions, where we even use local languages, is finally the self-management.
Top three successes
The awareness of the communities about the danger of environmental destruction in general; the involvement of the caumunity living in the Virunga National Park in the resistance against the oil exploitation project in the Virunga National Park; the award we received from the Alexander Soros Foundation in the USA in 2015.
Top three challenges
Three projects have been successful: the management of rubbish and other non-biodegradable materials in the fisheries around Lake Edward; the installation of a community laboratory for mycelium around the Virunga National Park; and the creation of a community hutch.
