Main CEPA work areas

Mostly producing producing technical information on how to restore, conserve and sustainably use Cerrado resources; we also collaborate with and produce materials and information to various non-specialist publics such as local rural communities, protected areas managers

Top three successes

Research and outreach projects involving the sustainable use of two economically species in the region of Jalapão, Tocantins in the production of golden-grass handicrafts. Both species (Syngonanthus nitens – golden-grass and Mauritia flexuosa – buriti) are harvested from wetlands. The project involves various stakeholders in the academy, government and local communities and has helped promote the sustainable use of both species, their ecosystems as well as local livelihoods.

Top three challenges

Involving different kinds of stakeholders is key for the actual success of sustainable use and livelihoods projects; large infra-struture/development projects need to be also considered and discuss.
